Canon Announces the EOS R3 Mirrorless Camera With Eye Tracking Autofocus

Canon has announced a new professional mirrorless camera—the Canon EOS R3. As of yet, Canon Inc. hasn't revealed any details about the pricing or availability of its new camera.

Canon's Attention to Its Autofocus Technology

The EOS R3 is one of the biggest changes to Canon's EOS R lineup in recent times. In a press release on the Canon Newsroom, the company states:

This camera will usher in a new category to the EOS R system, positioned squarely between the EOS R5 and EOS-1D X Mark III cameras.

With the EOS R3, Canon has placed emphasis on providing users with good and fast performing autofocus technology. This includes better head, eye, face, and body detection.

Specifically, the new camera will improve upon the autofocus technology from the EOS R5 and EOS R6. Canon will achieve this by using Deep Learning technology "to further enhance eye and body detection." This should translate into better performance during portrait and action-oriented shooting.

The EOS R3 will also feature "Eye Control AF" that will allow users to select an initial area for autofocus by simply looking at it through the electronic viewfinder. Thought the feature will only work in still-image shooting conditions.

Canon Believes the EOS R3 Will Be a Game Changer

With a slew of design changes and new features, Canon is definitely hoping to shake things up in the world of mirrorless cameras.

The EOS R3 uses a completely new "full-frame stacked CMOS sensor" designed by Canon. According to the company, the new sensor has reduced "rolling shutter" distortion and will allow for "Electronic Shutter still-image shooting at speeds up to 30 fps."

When it comes to body, the EOS R3 features a single-piece design with a vertical grip section. Like the EOS 1D class of cameras, this new camera will be weather and dust resistant, making it a good choice for wildlife and outdoor photographers.

In addition to this, Canon has confirmed that their "Mobile File Transmitter" app will be compatible with the EOS R3, allowing for an easy transfer of photographs.

A Challenge to Canon's DSLR Range?

Mirrorless cameras have certain advantages over DSLRs, the primary one being a more compact body design. This is due to the absence of the mirror that reflects light to the optical viewfinder in a traditional DSLR.

But there is a catch—electronic viewfinders tend to be slower than optical viewfinders when creating a scene. This is because of the electronic circuitry involved.

However, with the advancements in camera technology, especially in the EOS R3, this may soon be a thing of the past. It's likely that the EOS R3 will pave the way forward for mirrorless cameras to finally replace DSLRs.
