Google Unveils New Assistant Features, Including "Find My iPhone"

Google has unveiled a handful of new Assistant features for iOS and Android, including the ability to find a lost or misplaced iPhone with a simple voice command.

A post on The Keyword rounds up five new (or existing but more widely available) features in Assistant "that help you tackle small things around the house."

"Hey Google, Find My iPhone"

The headline feature is named Find My iPhone.

Previously available on Android via Nest smart speakers and smart displays, this feature now supports iPhones via the Google Home app for iOS. Before using this feature, be sure to turn on notifications for Google's Home app on iOS using the in-app settings.

With that done, you can simply say something along the lines of "Hey Google, find my phone" or some such to receive a notification when the phone has been found. You'll also hear a custom ringing sound, even if your iPhone is set to Do Not Disturb or on silent mode.

Duplex Can Now Help You Order Takeout

When ordering from nearby restaurants via the Google App on Android, make your menu selection like you normally would. As part of the checkout process, Assistant will now automatically navigate the site and fill out your contact and payment details saved in Google Pay and synced to Chrome Autofill.

This requires partner participation so be sure that your favorite restaurant is onboard.

Sunrise/Sunset Triggers Expand Globally

The location-based sunrise and sunset triggers that help you schedule Assistant Routines are now available globally.

To get started, touch the "New" tab in the Google Home app or your Assistant settings, then hit "add starter" underneath the heading "how to start" to reveal a hidden option for sunrise and sunset. From there, customize the time and specific actions you want a Routine to trigger as soon as the sun rises or sets down.

A Revamped Routines Creation Process

When creating your own macro with Assistant Routines, you'll now see a carousel of suggested actions highlighting popular choices. On Android, users can now put Routines shortcuts on their home screens via the overview screen for Routines in the Google Home app or their Assistant settings.

Questions About the Oscars

Last but not least, Assistant can now answer questions about the 2021 Oscars, which are dominated by streaming services. You can ask "when are the Oscars?" or "Who’s nominated for Animated Feature Film?". You can also learn about Google's own Oscar predictions or join in the fun on the night by saying, "Hey Google, give me an award."

These new features are now available to Google Assistant users globally.
