Microsoft Launches the Surface Laptop 4 With Intel and AMD Options

Microsoft has announced the Surface Laptop 4 lineup with faster Intel and AMD CPU options. The company has refreshed both the 13.5-inch and 15-inch variants of the Surface Laptop series.

Microsoft is promising up to 70% performance improvement over the Surface Laptop 3. It also promises that the new laptops can deliver a battery life of up to 19 hours on a single charge.

Same Design Language, New CPU Options

The Surface Laptop 4 carries forward the same design language that Microsoft first debuted with the 2019's Surface Laptop 3. This also means that you get the same selection of ports as the previous Surface Laptop: 1x USB-A port, 1x USB-C, and 1x Surface Connector. This also means that the Surface Laptop continues to miss out on Thunderbolt support.

The 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 4 will be available in a new Ice Blue color made with Alcantara fabric. The 15-inch model will only be available in platinum and matte black metal finish.

Microsoft has made most of the changes internally this time around by using new chips from Intel and AMD. The new CPU options are available in both 13.5-inch and 15-inch variants. Microsoft is using Intel's 11th gen. Tiger Lake CPUs or AMD's Surface Edition chips, which is based on the older Zen 2 architecture.

The base 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 4 features the six-core Ryzen 5 4680U CPU, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD. The more powerful variants are available with Intel's Core i5-1135G7 and Core i7-1185G7 CPUs, with up to 32GB RAM and 1TB of SSD.

Microsoft claims the 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 4 with Intel CPUs can offer up to 17 hours of battery life, while the 15-inch models can last for 16.5 hours on a single charge. The 13.5-inch AMD-based Surface Laptop 4 is certified to last for 19 hours on a single charge and up to 17.5 hours for the 15-inch variant.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 comes with the Ryzen 7 4980U CPU, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD. This variant can also be purchased with an Intel Core i7-1185G7 CPU.

None of the models feature a dedicated GPU. The Intel CPU variants feature an Intel Xe dedicated graphics, while the AMD versions feature an integrated Radeon GPU.

Other specs of the Surface Laptop 4 include Windows Hello for facial recognition, 720p webcam, dual far-field studio microphones, Dolby Atmos-certified speakers, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Price and Availability

The Surface Laptop 4 starts from $999 for the 13.5-inch variant with the AMD CPU and $1,299 for the Intel-based version. It will start shipping in the US, Canada, and Japan starting April 15th. Microsoft will expand the availability to other markets in the "coming weeks."

If you pre-order the Surface Laptop 4 through Microsoft's online store or Best Buy before April 15, you will also get the Surface Earbuds as a gift.
