Canon Announces the RF 100mm F2.8L MACRO IS USM Lens With Up to 1.4x Magnification

Canon has announced a dedicated macro lens for the RF mount—the Canon RF 100mm F2.8L MACRO IS USM. The lens is priced at $1,399 and is stipulated to release in July 2021.

The Canon RF 100mm F2.8L Offers Up to 1.4x Magnification

In a press release on the Canon Newsroom, the company claims that the RF 100mm F2.8L is the "world’s first medium telephoto macro lens with a maximum magnification of 1.4x."

The new lens is also Canon's first attempt at creating an RF lens specifically for macro photography.

The company aims to market the RF 100mm F2.8L to "advanced photo enthusiasts and professionals." The features are a testament to Canon's claim.

The lens comes with a spherical aberration (SA) control ring that allows photographers to customize the appearance of the bokeh. A simple turning of the ring will also allow users "to obtain a softer focus effect."

To reduce shake when using the camera handheld, the lens has optic image stabilization "with up to five stops of shake correction." When paired with an EOS R camera with in-body image stabilization the lens and camera will provide a combined 8 stops of image stabilization.

For shift and angle camera shakes, Canon's Hybrid Image Stabilization (IS) comes to the rescue. Canon claims that its image stabilization feature will compensate for these movements in order to click impeccable up close pictures.

Other features of the RF 100mm F2.8L MACRO IS USM lens include a capable autofocus feature with dual nano USM and a completely dust and water resistant design.

Canon Announced Two Other RF Lenses as Well

There have been a slew of new product announcements by Canon. This includes the latest camera in Canon's EOS R Mirrorless Camera lineup, the EOS R3.

In the lens department, apart from the RF 100mm F2.8L, the company has announced two other lenses—the Canon RF400mm F2.8L IS USM and Canon RF600mm F4L IS USM

Both these lenses have some of the same features as the RF 100mm F2.8L, but they are obviously made for different shooting situations.

Some additional features in these lenses include Canon's Super Spectra and Air Sphere Coatings that help reduce ghosting and flaring. Canon claims its "coatings are optimized to provide users with clear, high-contrast images even when there is a bright light source."

Conveniently, the lenses also come with two focus presets that can be switched between easily.

They are priced significantly higher than the RF 100mm F2.8L, at $11,999 and $12,999 respectively.
