Google's New Play Store Feature Will Make Apps Faster to Install

Google is rolling out a new Play Store feature that aims to speed up app installs on your device. The company first started testing this feature over a month ago.

Google is calling this feature App install optimization. It is being automatically rolled out for all Android devices and is enabled by default as well.

App Install Optimization Will Speed Up App Installs and Launch Times

App install optimization makes apps faster to install, open, and run. It does this by crowdsourcing data on which part of an app you use the most after installing it. Google says this feature will also help in reducing the strain on your device's CPU, battery, and storage.

Below is how Google explains the feature:

When you turn on app install optimization, Google can tell which parts of an app you use the first time you open it after installation. When enough people do this, Google can optimize the app to install, open, and run faster for everyone.

While Google crowdsources the data for app install optimization, it does not collect your personal data like name, email address, etc. Similarly, it does not collect any information outside of the app like the other apps installed on your device. All data downloaded or uploaded in the app is also not collected.

App install optimization is enabled by default on all Android devices. If you want to opt out of this feature, you can do so from the Google Play Store settings. Google does note that even if you disable the app install optimization feature, you will still benefit from it.

Once the app install optimization feature is rolled out to your Android device, you will automatically get a pop-up about it when you first open the Play Store.

This new feature comes hot on the heels of Google rolling out a new UI for the Play Store without the hamburger menu.

How to Verify if App Install Optimization Is Enabled on Your Android Device

You can verify whether app install optimization is enabled on your Android device or not from the Play Store settings.

1. Open the Play Store app.

2. Tap on your profile photo in the top-right corner and select Settings.

3. From the Settings page that opens, ensure that the toggle for the App install optimization feature is turned on. If you want to disable this feature, you can toggle it off from here.

You can read more about app install optimization in Google's support document. The feature is being rolled out as a server-side update from Google, so it will automatically show up on your Android device.
