The PlayStation App Now Tells You When Your Friends Want to Game

Sony has recently released several updates to the PlayStation mobile app that add to the social aspect of the platform, as well as reintroducing some old favorite features to the app.

PlayStation Mobile App Gets Several Updates

If you've got the PlayStation app on your Android or iOS device, then you may have noticed a couple of changes to how it works.

That is because, as part of the PlayStation April update schedule, Sony has updated the app as well as updating the PS5 console firmware.

But what do these updates look like? Do they make the app any better?

PlayStation Mobile App Updates Explained

The new updates to the app cover several facets of PlayStation's mobile companion.

First up, we have the social aspects of the app. Now, you can receive notifications on your mobile every time one of your friends comes online. If you've got a lot of friends, this might get pretty irritating, though (fortunately, you can turn the feature off if it is getting on your nerves).

You can also remotely change your online status from the app. So if you leave your console running for updates, you can change your online status to let your friends know you haven't actually just sat in the Call of Duty lobby for fourteen straight hours. This helps prevent your friends from wasting time sending game invites, too.

Second, we have a store-based feature on the app, which is adding games to your wishlist on the PlayStation Store. This allows you to add games to your list on the go. You can even purchase them and start the download remotely if your PS is operating.

Are Any More Updates Coming to the PlayStation App?

They are, but we'll have to wait and see what else Sony has up its digital sleeve as the new features aren't ready yet. According to a recent PlayStation Blog post:

In the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out even more, including the ability to join a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, manage your PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store.

So it looks like we'll be getting some neat features for the PS mobile companion. Perhaps Sony will allow us to, you know, download a simple PS5 screenshot more easily from the app. That would be useful...

Stay Social With the PlayStation Mobile App

With the recent closure of its PlayStation Communities, Sony really needs to give its user base a way to contact like-minded gamers. These steps are just those, steps toward a better social experience, but Sony has a long way to go to keep its users socially satisfied.
