You Can Now Add the Current Date to Your Chromebook's Shelf

One of the basic things that Chromebooks has lacked so far is the ability to display the current date on the shelf. Fortunately, this is changing as Google has added an option in Chrome OS to hide and unhide the date on the shelf.

Show the Current Date on Your Chromebook's Shelf

According to Chrome Story, there's an experimental flag in Chrome OS 90 that you can enable to display the current date on the shelf. You just need to toggle on this single flag and it pins the current date to your Chromebook's shelf.

Limitations With Displaying the Current Date on the Shelf

There are a couple of limitations with adding the current date to the Chrome OS' shelf.

First, you can only display the date on the shelf if the shelf is pinned to the bottom. If you've placed the shelf on the right or the left of your screen, you can't display the date on it.

Second, Google says your Chromebook should be "sufficiently large" in order to display the current date on the shelf. While Google doesn't clarify what "sufficiently large" means, folks over at 9to5Google advise that any screen wider than 1280 pixels is large enough to show the date on the shelf.

How to Show the Current Date on the Chromebook Shelf

It's easy to display the current date on the shelf as all you need to do is toggle on an experimental flag. You've likely done this before if you've used a Chromebook or the Chrome browser for some time.

Here's what you need to do to enable the date on the Chromebook's shelf:

  1. Open a new tab and type the following:
    chrome://flags
  2. Search for the flag named Enable Show Date In Tray.
  3. Click the dropdown menu next to that flag and select Enabled.
  4. Reboot your Chromebook.

When your Chromebook boots back up, you should see the current date in an abbreviated format on your shelf. Usually, clicking the date opens a calendar but this doesn't seem to be the behavior of the date item on Chromebooks.
