Google Photos' New Video Editor Arrives on Android

Just a couple of months ago, Google teased that a new video editor coming to Google Photos. Some users started seeing the new editor in March, but now it's rolling out to all Google Photos users on Android, as spotted by Android Police.

If you like recording videos on Android and giving them a little extra to help make them stand out, this new video editor for Google Photos is exactly what you need.

Google Photos' New Video Editor Is Here

The original Google Photos video editor only allowed users to stabilize, rotate, and trim their videos. The new editor, however, is far more powerful. It did those functions well enough, but it just wasn't sufficient for anyone looking to take their videos to the next level.

With the new editor, you'll get extensive cropping options, horizon correction, and audio removal. But it doesn't end there, as Google is also adding a suite of color correction tools to its video editor. All of the standard post-processing options are there. You can adjust brightness, contrast, white point, warmth, tint, skin color, vignette, and more.

If you're used to the Google Photos image editor, you should feel comfortable, as many of the same filters are included with the new video editor. It also feels similar to how you'll actually perform edits, but you'll use video instead of still images.

For those times when you see a particular frame in your video that you think would make a nice still image, you can export it, which is a nice feature to have. This can lead to some fantastic images, so it's a feature that's definitely worth using.

Unfortunately, the one thing the new and improved video editor can't do is combine clips and create movies. If you're looking to combine multiple clips to make more complex videos, you'll need to stick with a more traditional video editor like Premiere Pro. The tool is about making a single clip look better rather than combining multiple clips.

How to Get the New Google Photos Video Editor

The new editor is rolling out through a server-side update on many Android phones. It's not limited to just users with Pixel devices, so if you have an Android phone, you should be able to try the update soon.

If you don't see it on your device yet, you'll need to be patient, as Google appears to be doing a gradual rollout. However, you can try to force the update to appear on your device by downloading the latest version from Google Play, but that doesn't always work.
